Who Innovates? 4-2-2011
It's funny many recognized or official "leaders" are not the initiators of sweeping cultural movements. I am believing more and more that the true leaders of change are the anonymous risk taking agents that make up what is known as the grass roots.
Recognized leaders can do a lot to draw attention to and legitimize a maturing movement.
It is my belief that very rarely is it a recognized leader that gives birth to the movement. Within organizations and society innovation is risk taking. It is stepping outside of conformity and exposing yourself to scrutiny. I have to admit this is uncomfortable. Most leaders would find it difficult to truly do this and remain influential. Most leaders instead may seek to back a winner already making waves. Visionary leaders can pick out the winner well before it becomes apparent to everyone else.
Now the views expressed in this blog post are solely my own and are not based on academic scholarly research, but rather are derived from my observations and experiences within organizations.
-What are your thoughts? Who really innovates within organizations and society?
